Transmission & Distribution
Once electricity is generated it is either used at the source or distributed elsewhere. Transformers are key to the efficient transmission of electricity. Step up transformers boost the electricity to high voltages for long distances, and stepped down for distribution into city and rural grids before being stepped down again to service voltages
CMI has a long history of supplying components to the T&D market, for both OEM and repair. Early in our history we developed a cost effective way for manufacturing oil ducting for distribution transformers. For many years CMI has been a key supplier of high density pressboard components and winding kits for oil filled power transformers. Many investments have been made by CMI to support the high demands of this industry.
CMI manufactures a number of flux containment devices to reduce hot spots and boost the efficiency in a power transformer.
Utilities are very focused on losses within the network, with transformers getting much of the focus. Because of their long life span, even single digit improvements can add up. CMI manufactures a number of flux containment devices to reduce hot spots and boost the efficiency in a power transformer. Our flux shunts range from a pressure ring product line acquired from Westinghouse, to yoke shunts and tank wall shielding. A variety of configurations can be manufactured in sizes not offered elsewhere.
Also acquired from ABB and Westinghouse are our low voltage bushings and 2 part epoxy systems. CMI’s low voltage bushings utilize copper and aluminum conductors that are insulated with a Bis-A epoxy system that we cast. Over 150 different styles of 1.2 & 1.5 kV class are manufactured in 30-45 kV BIL from 1500 – 5400 amp. Our 2 part epoxies are formulated for different applications ranging from porcelain patching to core edge bonding.
Filament wound glass pressure rings manufacturing was another acquisition from Westinghouse. Initially developed for mobile transformers, their use in power transformers has increased as a way to reduce the transformer size, and ultimately their cost, because of the high strength to weight ratio of the composite rings.
Our wide range of fabrication capabilities allows CMI to manufacture other important components for dry and oil filled transformers and is not limited to only electrical insulation:
- Gaskets
- Tap changer components
- Instrument transformer component
- Inhibited oil concentrate
- Flexible conductors and busbar
- Arc Interrupters
- Bushing adaptors
- Winding Combs
- Step support blocking
